The Faculty of Theoretical and Applied Economics, alongside which operates the Doctoral School of Economics I, is the only faculty within the ASE (Bucharest University of Economic Studies) that offers educational programs in the field of Economics as a fundamental science, providing a holistic perspective on the theoretical-methodological and strategic-operational foundations of the integrated system of economic sciences.

About the Doctoral School of Economics I

The field of doctoral studies in Economics has evolved over time under the impact of various economic doctrines and schools of thought. This evolution is reflected in the different names given to the field, such as Political Economy, General Economics, or simply Economics (with equivalents like Economics in the Anglo-Saxon tradition and Political Economy in the Francophone tradition). The variations in the names of the field also extend to the titles granted, which have oscillated between Doctor (PhD) of Economic Sciences and Doctor (PhD) of Economics. These fluctuations in terminology and titles primarily reflect shifts both in theoretical-methodological approaches and in strategic-operational aspects, mirroring the evolution of economic thought in response to real-world challenges and accumulated practical experience and expertise.

Economic science harmoniously combines fundamental research based on explanatory models and relevant epistemic approaches with applied research that facilitates the formulation of coherent and competent decisions across various levels of decision-making, from micro to macroeconomic. As such, the evolution of doctoral training and academic research in the field of Economics within the Doctoral School of Economics I has been characterized by the promotion of, on one hand, a focus on the conceptual architecture of various economic theories and, on the other hand, the methods and tools used to apply economic knowledge in reality, mainly through the coherent formulation and implementation of economic strategies and policies.

The Faculty of Theoretical and Applied Economics has been a constant presence, under various names, since the first year of the existence of the Bucharest University of Economic Studies. Within this faculty, prominent figures have carried out distinguished teaching and scientific research activities, contributing to an important chapter in the history of Romanian economic thought. Among them, we can mention Gheorghe Tașcă, Ion N. Angelescu, Virgil Madgearu, and Gromoslav Mladenatz. This constellation of personalities in the Romanian economic school continued in the post-war period, even under the complicated conditions of the time, with academics like Nicolae N. Constantinescu and Tudorel Postolache, and professors such as Ion Blaga, Constantin Danciu, Nicolae Ivanciu-Văleanu, Niță Dobrotă or Dinu Marin.

Therefore, the Faculty of Theoretical and Applied Economics has a rich and diverse experience in training, professional development, and research in the field of economics. The doctoral program in Economics I prepares doctoral students and facilitates the completion of complex interdisciplinary scientific research, which simultaneously employs sophisticated economic analysis and econometric modeling tools, as appropriate, to explain, evaluate, and interpret the complexity and interdependencies between economic theories and policies.
